If you look closely there’s the briefest moment just before he’s about to back away from her where he pauses and opens his eyes. I think for split second Klaus was worried about seeing Caroline’s reaction as this is the first time he’s physically shown his love for her. And the fact that Caroline didn’t flinch, get angry or even try to laugh it off, just shows how far both of them have come.
